Manor ponder on what should have been.

This tight affair was won by a strong Woodford team, despite a late push by Eton Manor, bringing them close to a valuable win. Despite Woodford holding the majority of the possession throughout the game they failed to create many try scoring opportunities, and rarely troubled the Manor defence, it was in fact Eton Manor who created the clearer cut chances.
Woodford started the stronger of the two sides, with Eton Manor having little possession or territory in the opening 15 minutes. Woodford missed a penalty after just 2 minutes, but finally made their pressure tell in the 12th minute with a simple penalty from in front of the posts. Shortly after the restart Manor had their first chance of the game, however basic errors lead to a loss of possession short of the line. Woodford regained possession and territory, but a resulting 20th minute penalty was missed from the right touch line by Woodford.
From here the game continued to be a closely contested battle, with no clear cut chances until the 30th minute when an overlap on the left was wasted by Manor as the ball was dropped just short of the line when a try looked up for grabs. After this, Woodford had a strong breakaway chance, however good Manor defence prevented any score. The half continued to be a hard and even battle, with no further chances before half time with Woodford leading 3-0

Manor had the better of the early exchanges of the second half, but it was Woodford who would score the first try of the game. After a scrum Woodford took strong first phase ball through the centre of the pitch, before a good break by No10 Huw Lewis allowed Niall Moody to score in the right hand corner. The conversion was missed, Woodford were now leading 8-0 after 48 minutes. Woodford had a further chance to extend their lead on 52 minutes with a simple penalty chance in front of the posts but the opportunity was lost due to talking back to the referee.
After this the game continued to be a tight affair, but basic mistakes from both sides stopped either creating any good chances, but Manor were now taking control of things and looked by far the most dangerous of the two sides. It wasn’t until the 70th minute until another chance was seen, with Eton Manor making good advances, resulting in a simple penalty 30 metres out. This kick was missed; however Eton Manor’s superior fitness began to tell as chances were created. In the 77th minute Manor had a penalty 8 metres from the Woodford line. This was taken quickly by Rob Lycett, but he was held up over the line. The referee decided that the tacklers had not retreated far enough and so had denied a clear cut try scoring opportunity and so awarded a penalty try. Rushed for time, the conversion was missed. 8-5 with 3 minutes to go.
Perhaps the most controversial action of the game came with 1 minute left. Manor were now pushing for victory and running rampant against a tired Woodford side, they showed good hands and offloading to get within 5 metres of the Woodford line. Second rower Macer Twydell was taken down just a metre short of the line, but got up and continued to touch down. However the referee felt that Macer was held and so penalised Manor for a very dubious double movement. With no time left on the clock this was the last chance of the game as Woodford held out for a close win in a typically tight local derby.
