Eton Manor travelled to high flying Bury St Eds knowing they faced the hardest test of the season so far.

Just two weeks earlier the home team had pummelled Manors local rivals Chingford by sixty points. Injuries and absence meant Manor had a few new (and one old face) in the squad.

The sun shone on the excellent Bury pitch as the whistle blew. The home team started the better of the two teams but just made a few errors at the wrong time. The Manor pack showed an early dominance as they started to get more into the game. Bury looked to have crossed the line early but the player was adjudged to have put a foot into touch. Manor had escaped off the hook and took the opportunity to use their forwards to drive into the Bury half. Bury were forced into a poor kick to release the pressure and Reese Reed returned it with interest and fed Rodall Misuri who drove into the home sides defence. Fast ball came from the ruck and Max Murray and Callum McKie got the ball quickly to Alex Hunter who exploited a few missed tackles to break away and pass to the looping Callum McKie who sprinted in for the try (unconverted 0-5).

Bury St Eds tried to use their pacey back line to get themselves into the game and they managed to put alot of strain onto the Manor defences. They missed a penalty but kept Manor penned in using accurate kicking, but each time the magnificent Manor forwards always managed to grab the advantage back. On the half hour mark Reese Reed got a chance to extend the lead which he took by converting a tricky penalty (0-8).

Bury St Eds got themselves onto the scoreboard soon after with a penalty (3-8) and momentum swung their way a bit further when Ian Edwards was shown a yellow with two minutes left in the half. Bury sensed blood and they were determined to score before the whistle but Manor defences held out.

Half Time Bury St Edmunds 3 Eton Manor 8

The Manor players looked battered and bruised but the spirit was strong as they worked hard in the opening minutes of the second half. With a man advantage Bury pressed hard and forced a penalty that was close enough to the Manor line for them to power over for the try (8-8).

Ian Edwards returned to the pitch to bolster the defences but a Bury penalty (11-8) in the 52nd minute really got the home supporters going. The game levelled out as Bury tried to extend their lead. The Manor players refused to let the game swing away from them and gave as good as they got. Bury St Eds managed to carve out some territory and the pressure once again forced a penalty. The home side looked to wrap up the game by kicking for the lineout and it was a good move as a set move saw them cross the line for their second try, unconverted (16-8).

With 17 minutes to play things looked bleak for the Manor as Macer Twydel was yellow carded. Bury St Eds looked to get another score and maybe get the bonus point for four tries. They were met with passionate play from Eton Manor who refused to lie down and forced a penalty from the home side that Callum McKie converted to bring Manor right back into it with ten minutes to play (16-11)

Macer Twydel returned to the field, the Manor pack got to work and stomped into Bury territory. Bury still looked to break out and used attack as the best form of defence but they could not make any inroads. Burys captain and stand out player was forced into desperate measures on his own line and saw a yellow to end his involvement in the game.

Manor tried to force the try and looked to have blown their chance as Bury scrambled and recovered the ball, but they could not clear their lines and Manor regained the ball. With 80mins well passed on the clock Manor were careful with their decisions and held onto the ball in front of the visitors posts. When the time was right they struck and released the ball left, Alex Hunter went for the gap and tied up two defenders. The ball was gathered by the excellent Callum McKie who drew the last defender and got the ball to Misuri who held of the scrambling defenders to score the try (16-16) Callum McKie bravely stepped up to take the conversion from the touchline and nearly sent the home fans home unhappy as the ball rebounded of the cross bar.
